The latest in the series of Perspectives reports from IEA Coal Research reviews the trends in the planning and construction of new coal-fired plants entering service within the OECD in the period 1991-2000. During the 1990s, 127 new coal-fired units for power generation will have been commissioned, representing approximately 5500 MWe annually. The report lists coal-fired generating units commissioned between 1991 and 1996, together with those planned for commissioning between 1997 and 2000. The influence of deregulation and developments in the use of different technologies during the period under review are discussed. Case studies are included which reflect both supercritical developments and the continued use of subcritical steam conditions.
