2nd IEA CCC workshop on A-USC coal-fired power plants

Posted: 23 October 2014 By: Dr Geoff Morrison

The second IEA CCC workshop on advanced ultra-supercritical coal-fired power plants took place in Rome on 14-15 October at the excellent facilities provided by Centro Sviluppo Materiali (CSM). The event was attended by 65 delegates from 13 countries, including the main regions where development work on high temperature materials for advanced ultra-supercritical (A-USC) power plants is taking place: Europe, China, Japan and the USA. In addition to papers on national materials development programmes there were several technical presentations on all aspects of materials development and fabrication including boilers, turbines, pipework, etc and on the analysis and testing of individual steels and alloys. The number of presentations from Chinese organisations was testament to the scale of development taking place in China.

Immediately following the one a half days of presentations there was a two hour tour of the extensive materials testing and development facilities of CSM including the TEM (Transmission Electron Microscope), Nanoscope, Mechanical Testing Facility, Surface Engineering Facility (HVOF, PVD, Plasma Spray, PTA), Ceramics Materials, Foundry Technology and High Temperature Chemistry  Department.
No meeting in Rome would be complete without at least a glimpse of the historic city centre. On the evening of the first day of the workshop delegates were invited to a walking tour of Rome taking in some of the most famous sights including the Colosseum and the Roman Forum. This was followed by a typically Italian meal in the Restaurant L’Archeologia on the Appian Way. All of which made for a very long day but one much appreciated by the distinctly international group.

This was the second in this series of workshops – the first being held at EVN in Vienna in September 2012. Our intention is to combine the next workshop with the series on upgrading and efficiency improvement in coal-fired power plants, the third of which was held in September 2014 in Shanghai, sometime in early 2016. Any suggestions for where this should be held or offers of hosting the next event would be well received.
