The literature on the structural chemical analysis of coal since 1980 is reviewed although limited to an account of the highlights. A detailed, critical, review is not attempted. The topics covered include: molecular weight; aromacitity; aromatic ring structures; aliphatic structures; functional groups and heteroatoms; sturctural changes with rank; the ?mobile phase?; macromolecular structures and structural models. progress in each of these topics is assessed.
