Beijing Research Institute of Coal Chemistry
BRICC (China) is represented on the IEA CCC Executive Committee by Prof. Qu Sijian and Wang Lin.
In 2005 the Beijing Research Institute of Coal Chemistry (BRICC) of China Coal Research Institute, under the support of the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, became a sponsor of the IEA Clean Coal Centre. BRICC was founded in 1956; it is one of the branches of China Coal Research Institute. It has seven departments: Coal Property and Environmental Protection; Coal Liquefaction Technology; Coal Chemical Engineering Technology; Coking Technology and Quality Inspection;Coal Water Mixture Technology; Clean Coal Technology Development; and Research and Development of New Technology. It also runs the US/China Clean Coal Technology Center and Chinese Energy Conservation & Supervision Center of Coal Industry. BRICC acts as Chinese National Technical Committee for Standardization of Coal, Coal Chemistry Committee of China Coal Society, and Branch for Coal Conversion of China Coal Processing & Utilization Association. Moreover BRICC has obtained Grade A Credentials for Engineering Consultation issued by the former State Planning Commission and Grade B Credentials for Engineering Design issued by the Ministry of Construction. Authorized by the State Council’s Academic Degree Commission, BRICC is entitled to confer doctorate and Master’s degree for chemical technologies.
Over the past 50 years, BRICC has played an important role in Chinese coal research and technologies development. In the last three years alone, it has undertaken more than 70 national fundamental research projects and 50 national technology development projects. For example, BRICC was selected to lead the National Basic Research Priorities (973) programme – Fundamental Research on Large-Scale Direct Coal Liquefaction and High-tech R&D (863) programme – High-Reactivity Catalyst for Direct Coal Liquefaction. BRICC also pioneered research on investigation of coal-based poly-generation, study on alternative liquid energy in China, major CCT industrialisation and policy study, study on physical-chemical process of solid surface for pollutants removal, chemistry basis of coal gasification process, and energy conversion database for typical coals in China. BRICC is also involved in the National 11th Five-Year Plan for Coal Chemical Projects.
In recent years, along with deepening reforms in scientific and technical systems, BRICC has entered the market economy and formed an integrated development pattern with scientific research, technical development, product inspection and test, scientific and technical services, scientific and technical enterprises, engineering contract, technical and economic trade.
