Dr Stephen Mills

Dr Stephen Mills  joined the CCC in 2003 and has reported on a range of clean coal-related topics that have focused on advanced power generation, life cycle analysis, technology roadmapping, and issues associated with the growing use of renewable energies. He has also produced a number of studies examining the potential for clean coal technologies in specific countries or regions. Between 1997 and 2003, Steve was an independent consultant, working for a range of commercial clients, academia and consultancies. He reported on technical, strategic, economic and market issues associated with a range of energy and environmental topics, mainly associated with clean coal use and advanced power generation. Several major projects were undertaken for the IEA Clean Coal Centre and IEA Greenhouse Gas R&D Programme. Between 1974 and 1997, Steve worked for the National Coal Board’s Coal Research Establishment (CRE) in Cheltenham and several of the successor companies, following  privatisation. During this time, his roles included Project Scientist, Team Leader, and Project Manager. Early projects included the development of novel chemicals from coal-derived feedstocks, the production and commercialisation of advanced polymeric materials for the mining and power generation sectors, and improvements to coal cleaning processes. Latterly, he worked predominantly in the area of advanced power generation technologies.
Steve has an ONC and HNC in Chemistry, a Licentiateship in Polymer Chemistry, and a degree in Polymer Science. In 1997, he was awarded a PhD by the University of Leicester. He started his career working for ICI in the UK. [email protected]
